Disney World, Universal, a Cruise, or an All-Inclusive? How to Choose the Right Family Vacation

You know you need a vacation. Maybe you're picturing your kids meeting their favorite Disney characters. Maybe your teenager has been begging to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Maybe you want to unpack once, visit several destinations, and let someone else handle the entertainment. Or maybe what you really want is a beach, a chair, a cold drink, and absolutely nothing on the schedule.

The good news? There isn't one right answer.

One of my favorite parts of being a travel planner is helping families figure out what kind of vacation actually fits them. Sometimes that's Disney World. Sometimes it's Universal Orlando. Sometimes a cruise makes much more sense. And sometimes an all-inclusive resort is exactly what a family needs. The trick is figuring out what you want your vacation to feel like before you decide where you're going.

So, if you're planning a family vacation for 2027 and aren't sure where to start, let's break down some of the most popular options.

Disney World: Best for Families Who Want Immersive Experiences and a Little Bit of Everything

I don't think it's a secret that I'm a big fan of Disney World. I visit multiple times a year, and I love that every trip can feel completely different depending on who I'm traveling with and what we decide to prioritize.

Disney World is a great choice for families who want an active vacation filled with attractions, entertainment, character experiences, themed dining, resort activities, and plenty of options. And there really is something for everyone.

You can spend your day riding attractions at Magic Kingdom, eating your way around EPCOT, exploring Pandora at Animal Kingdom, or stepping into the movies at Hollywood Studios. Then you can head back to your resort for a pool day, enjoy dinner at a resort restaurant, or explore Disney Springs.

And as much as I love this, it’s also one of the things that can make Disney feel overwhelming for some. There are a lot of decisions to make.

Where should you stay? How many park days do you need? Which parks should you visit? Should you use Lightning Lane? Where should you eat? Which attractions should you prioritize? How much time should you actually spend at the resort?

For families who enjoy planning and want a vacation where there is always something to do, Disney can be an amazing fit.

Disney World may be right for you if:

• Your family loves Disney characters and storytelling.

• You want lots of attractions and entertainment options.

• You enjoy an active vacation.

• You have younger children who would love the character experiences.

• You want a vacation that can work for multiple generations.

• You don't mind having some decisions to make before and during your trip.

And if the thought of planning all of those details makes you want to close your laptop and walk away, that's where a travel planner can make a big difference.

Universal Orlando: Best for Families Who Love Thrills, Harry Potter, and More

Universal Orlando is another one of my favorite vacation options, and it is very different from Disney World. If you have older kids, teenagers, or adults who love thrill rides, Universal may actually be the better fit for your family.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is an obvious draw for many families, but there is so much more to Universal than just Harry Potter. Between Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, and Epic Universe, there is plenty to keep families busy.

Universal also tends to have a different feel from Disney. The attractions generally lean more toward thrills, and families with older children may find that the park lineup fits their interests particularly well. But that doesn't mean younger kids can't have a great time at Universal. There are attractions and experiences for younger guests, and the resorts can be a fantastic part of the vacation, too.

In fact, choosing the right Universal resort can be a huge part of the planning process. Some on-site resorts offer perks that can make a significant difference in your park experience, so I always recommend looking at the entire vacation package rather than simply choosing the least expensive hotel. The Hard Rock Hotel, Portofino Bay, and Royal Pacific all include Universal Express Pass Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure for every day of your stay including check-in and check-out days. If you’re a family of 4+, this is a huge savings.

Universal may be right for you if:

• Your family loves intense roller coasters and thrill rides.

• You have tweens, teens, or adults who want more intense attractions.

• Your family loves Harry Potter, Nintendo, Jurassic Park, or other Universal franchises.

• You've already done Disney World several times and want something different.

• You want a more compact theme park vacation.

• Your family prefers attractions over character experiences.

And if you're wondering whether you should choose Disney or Universal, don't assume that one is automatically better. I've written more about the differences between Disney World and Universal Orlando, because the right choice really depends on your family's ages, interests, and vacation style. Sometimes, the answer is actually both.

A Cruise: Best for Families Who Want Variety Without Changing Hotels

If the thought of unpacking once and waking up somewhere new every few days sounds like your idea of a perfect vacation, a cruise might be the answer.

One of the biggest advantages of cruising is that your hotel comes with you. You can visit multiple destinations without packing and unpacking every few days, while your ship provides dining, entertainment, pools, activities, kids' clubs, and plenty of ways to spend your time. And don't assume that cruising is only for families who love sitting by the pool.

Depending on the cruise line and itinerary, you can spend your vacation snorkeling, exploring ports, visiting historic sites, ziplining, enjoying Broadway-style entertainment, trying new restaurants, or simply relaxing on deck.

And you don't just have to cruise with Disney.

Disney Cruise Line is obviously an excellent option for families and adults who want Disney magic at sea, but it isn't the only cruise line I recommend. Depending on your family's priorities, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, Viking, and other cruise lines may be a better fit.

That's one of the reasons I don't believe in simply recommending the cruise line I happen to like best. The best cruise is the one that matches your family, not what I like.

Are you looking for the biggest variety of activities?

Do you want a more relaxed, upscale experience?

Are you traveling with young children?

Are you traveling with teenagers?

Do you want an adults-only getaway?

Are the destinations more important than the ship?

Those answers can completely change which cruise I would recommend.

A cruise may be right for you if:

• You want to visit multiple destinations on one vacation.

• You don't want to change hotels.

• Your family members have different interests.

• You want plenty of entertainment and activities included.

• You like the idea of having dining options available without planning every meal from scratch.

• You want a vacation that can balance activities and relaxation.

And cruises can also pair beautifully with other vacations. A land and sea Disney World and Disney Cruise combination is a popular example, but you could also add a cruise to a land vacation in another destination.

Sometimes the best vacation isn't choosing between two experiences. It's combining them.

An All-Inclusive Resort: Best for Families Who Actually Want to Relax

Let's talk about the vacation option that sometimes gets overlooked by families who think they need to keep everyone entertained every second of the trip.

What if your vacation goal is to do less? An all-inclusive vacation can be a fantastic option.

Instead of planning a day around which attraction you're riding next or which port you're exploring, you can wake up, have breakfast, head to the pool or beach, grab lunch, participate in an activity if you feel like it, and decide what sounds good for dinner. And because many meals, drinks, activities, entertainment, and other amenities are included, you can have a better idea of what your vacation will cost before you arrive.

For families, Beaches Resorts is one example of an all-inclusive brand designed specifically around family travel, with kids' programs, water activities, dining, and other amenities included. And all-inclusive doesn't have to mean family vacation.

If you're planning a honeymoon, anniversary, adults-only getaway, or romantic escape, Sandals Resorts offers adults-only all-inclusive resorts throughout the Caribbean.

An all-inclusive may be right for you if:

• Your idea of vacation is actually relaxing.

• You want to spend time at the beach or pool.

• You don't want to plan every hour of your trip.

• You like knowing that many of your vacation expenses are bundled together.

• You're traveling with a family and want everyone to have activities available.

• You're planning a honeymoon, anniversary, or adults-only getaway.

And don't confuse “relaxing” with “boring.” Many all-inclusive resorts offer water sports, excursions, kids' clubs, entertainment, fitness activities, pools, spas, and plenty of opportunities to get out and explore. You can be as busy (or as lazy) as you want.

Honestly, sometimes that's exactly what we need from a vacation.

What About Aulani?

There are some vacations that don't fit neatly into one category. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawai’i, is a perfect example.

You get Disney's storytelling and attention to detail, but you're also getting a beautiful Hawaiian resort experience where relaxing by the pool or beach can be just as important as the activities. For families who love Disney but don't necessarily want a theme park vacation, Aulani can be a fantastic middle ground. And who doesn’t want to go to Hawai’i?

It's also an example of why I don't think you should choose a destination simply because someone else says it's the “best” family vacation. The best vacation is the one that fits your family.

What If You Want More Than One?

This is where things get fun. You don't necessarily have to choose just one type of vacation.

Some of my favorite vacation combinations are:

Disney World & Disney Cruise

Spend a few days enjoying the theme parks and then unwind on a Disney Cruise - in that order please! This is especially convenient when you're sailing from Port Canaveral and can combine your land and sea vacation into one trip.

Universal & Disney World

If your family can't decide between the two, you don't necessarily have to. With enough vacation time, you can split your stay between the two resorts and experience both. I do recommend staying at Disney when you are going to the Disney parks and staying at Universal when you are going to the Universal parks. You have on-site benefits like early park admission and Universal Express Pass Unlimited with certain resorts.

Theme Parks & Beach

Want the excitement of Disney or Universal but also want a few days where nobody has to think about park opening times? Add a beach stay. Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is my go-to option, but Florida is a peninsula with LOADS of beaches. Let’s find the right one for you.

Cruise & Land Vacation

Spend a few days exploring a destination before or after your cruise. This can be a great way to turn a cruise into a longer vacation rather than treating the sailing as the entire trip. Royal Caribbean and Sandals/Beaches recently partnered and can offer some great options.

A Vacation for Different Generations

Traveling with grandparents, parents, and children can make choosing a vacation more complicated because everyone may have different priorities. The grandparents may not be able to keep up with the parks or handle the heat. Kids may want more than what a simple beach vacation offers. That's when a vacation like a cruise or all-inclusive can be especially appealing because everyone can choose how they spend their time.

The kids can go to their activities. The adults can relax. The grandparents can enjoy the entertainment. And everyone can come together for meals and shared experiences.

So Which Family Vacation Is Right for You?

If you're still trying to decide, start with how you want to feel when you come home.

Choose Disney World if you want:

Magic, immersion, characters, attractions, and a vacation packed with things to do (remember you can build in breaks).

Choose Universal Orlando if you want:

Thrills, incredible theming, Harry Potter, Nintendo, and a vacation that may appeal particularly strongly to older kids and teens.

Choose a cruise if you want:

Multiple destinations, lots of onboard entertainment, combination of relaxation and activities, and the convenience of unpacking once.

Choose an all-inclusive if you want:

Relaxation, beaches, pools, activities, and the ability to have many vacation costs bundled together.

Choose Aulani if you want:

A beautiful Hawaiian vacation with Disney touches and plenty of opportunities to relax.

…And if you're still thinking, “That didn't help. I want all of those,” I completely understand. That's where having a travel planner can help.

One of the biggest misconceptions about using a travel planner is that you need to know exactly where you want to go before you contact one.

You don't.

In fact, I'd much rather have a client tell me:

From there, we can talk about your family's ages, travel style, priorities, dates, and what you want your vacation to feel like.

Maybe I'll recommend Disney.

Maybe I'll recommend Universal.

Maybe I'll tell you that a cruise makes more sense.

Or maybe I'll tell you that you should spend a week at an all-inclusive and actually relax for once.
